The Worst Defensive Game I’ve Seen

We’ve all been to Little League games and know how fun that can be watching the kids run around the bases after every missed throw or dropped ball or lost rookie.  We’ve also been to Major League games where the ball is tossed around without ever hitting the ground, players’ uniforms are impeccable, and the game is treated with great class and is a show for an entirely different reason (skill).  On Tuesday night in Cincinatti the Chicago Cubs looked more like the Little League team throwing the ball all around the ballpark than the Major League team they’re supposed to be.  We know Matt Garza has had some awful luck this year but, this is a new kind of awful.  The Cubs gave up 7 runs Tuesday and none of them were earned.  To see the highlight shows just how bad the errors were and just how important they were to the game. The Cubs had four errors.  Two on throws by pitchers that directly lead to runs.  One more fielding error by first baseman Carlos Pena and a fielding error by Wellington Casillo.  Throw in this crazy play and Kosuke Fukudome missing his cutoff man when he had a chance to throw a guy out and we see the mockery that the Cubs fielding was on Tuesday night.

Interestingly the Cubs 7 unearned runs given up on Tuesday represented more than the Phillies have given up all year in 41 games.  It’s almost comical how they simply handed this important divisional game to the Reds.  Especially after the 103 years since…, Cubs fans have to be getting frustrated.  Or, they’re so used to it, they simply don’t watch the games anymore.  It’s got to suck being a Cubs fan knowing your team is capable of throwing games like this.  I’m glad I’m a Braves fan for games like this.

Mike Stanton hits the ball really far.
