Down on the Farm with Jordyn Adams

Jordyn Adams was the Angels first round pick in 2018 and was the 17th player selected that year. He was also among the top 10 high school players selected and was the 4th high school position player picked despite being a highly touted football player who could have definitely gone on to play wide receiver at North Carolina.

I caught up with Jordyn recently and was able to ask him a few questions.

Adams is considered to be somewhat of a raw talent- after all, Jordyn Adams was a two sport star who was playing in high school just a year ago.

This year, when he first got to the Single A Burlington Bees of the Midwest league, he struggled a bit, hitting only .182/.312/.260 in April. But he has since turned things around, bumping his average by 58 points and finally showcasing his rare power-speed combo. Although Adams is a bit raw, he could become a special player if he continue to improve his hit tool.

James Weisser: Who is your favorite baseball player to watch?

Jordyn Adams: Honestly, I never really watched too much of any one because I was playing and practicing two different sports. The one player though I would have to say I study/watch the most is Andrew McCutchen, because I feel like me and him move in similar ways in the outfield so I study some of the small things he does.

JW: Who was your favorite football player to watch?

JA: That’s a tough question, when I first started playing wide receiver, I really started following Odell Beckham when he was at LSU, when he was younger, because he was still learning and developing. I’ve always been told that me and him move alike when I play, so just receivers that I’m similar too.

JW: What’s your favorite thing about the game of baseball?

JA: Just the way that you have to be consistent everyday. I mean in football it’s easy to go out and catch footballs everyday consistently, but it’s not easy to go out there and get 2 or 3 hits every day. You go days, maybe sometimes weeks where you only get 2 or 3 hits, so I honestly just like how the game keeps me humble and down to earth, that’s what I love about the game of baseball.

JW: I know when you first got to the Midwest League you struggled a bit in April ,and since that time you’ve done a good job turning things around, what do you attribute your success to right now?

JA: Just finding my routine. Coming in everyday, doing what I do at the same time, same thing everyday. Just getting into my routine and sticking to it everyday, not changing anything no matter how I did the day before, no matter how I did the week before. Just sticking to my routine everyday.

JW: What got you interested in baseball?

JA: I just played every sport growing up. I started playing baseball when I was 3, my brother was 5 and I was on his t-ball team. I started early because when I was 3 we lived in a small town and so it was kind of normal for people to start playing baseball early and that’s why did, but growing up I played basketball, soccer, flag football, baseball (hitting), mainly any sport that was going on in the community I was playing.

JW: What inspires you to do your best?

JA: Just having the opportunity to go out and play baseball everyday, because not everyone is blessed to be in the position that I am. I’m just grateful to be waking up everyday with a chance to play this game.

JW: How are you using the game of baseball to help others?

JA: I kind of always look at it like you never know what someone else might be going through so I really like to help put a smile on people’s faces so I enjoy signing autographs for people, especially kids.

JW: What’s one of your favorite movies?

JA: Friday Night Lights for sure. That’s my favorite movie to watch.

JW: What’s your favorite food?

JA: I’m a huge fruit guy so I love pineapples, strawberries, mangos, all the citrus fruits.

JW: What’s your favorite type of music?

JA: Hip hop, rap. I don’t really stick to any genre, but if I had to pick a genre that’d be it.

JW: If you could be any super hero or have any super hero power what/who would it be?

JA: I’m not really sure because I didn’t really pay attention to superheroes when I was growing up. If I had to choose a superpower it would be teleporting. It would be cool to be anywhere I want, any time I want.

JW: What do you like to do outside of baseball?

JA: I like to play video games, listen to music.

JW: What’s your favorite video game?

JA: Fortnite. I’m a huge Fortnite guy.
