A-Rod: “Poker, Fighting, and Cocaine: Good Times”

Who cares if A-Rod played in a high stakes poker game? Who cares if a fight broke out while he was playing? Who cares if there was a little bit of nose candy around? I’m sick of hearing and reading about it. I’m going to try to break down why none of these things matter.

Poker:

If I were him, I would be willing to blow a few hundred grand in a single night.  I know there have been nights I’ve spent a much larger portion of my bank account at a bar than Alex most likely did that night playing a game.  He at least had a chance to make money, whereas all I had a chance of doing was waking up very hungover (among other things). And who hasn’t played poker with their friends? It just so happens that his friends have a ton of money. Is that his fault? It would be a little weird if he were playing in a nickel and dime game.

Fighting:

The man is a centaur.  I’m pretty sure he could hold his own in a fight or at least use his horse legs to run away pretty quickly if it got too heated.  But, he wasn’t even involved in the fight!

Cocaine:
If he wasn’t railing lines, why is this even an issue? It was a bunch of rich people who enjoy risky behavior (gambling). Isn’t it safe to assume that a couple of them might also like to indulge in the risky behavior of drugs?  If he were at a bar or party there would probably be coke around too.  I mean it isn’t the 80s anymore, but it’s still pretty prevalent.

I know the MLB has decided to not punish A-Rod.  I’m just confused as to why everyone cared that he played poker.  He wasn’t betting on baseball.  In my opinion it was a waste of time and money for the MLB to even investigate this.  Off the field, I am not the biggest fan of A-Rod.  He seems like kind of an ass. As far as baseball etiquette is concerned, he may do some things that make you shake your head, but on the field he is a once in a generation talent and extremely fun to watch (even as he ages).  If anything this whole situation makes A-Rod seem more human to me.  If you take away the large amount of money that was involved, it could be any other poker game between friends.

Side Note:
Watch Road to the Big Leagues (Rumbo a las Grandes Ligas for the bi-lingual readers out there).  It is a great documentary about Dominican baseball and has some really cool interviews with Vlad and Big Papi.
